On the morning of March 23, 2008, the Alaska Ranger sank in the Bering Sea with 47 people on board, and the Coast Guard "launched one of the most daring and dramatic rescues in history." A firsthand account written by the person who got lost. The SAR team didn't end up deploying, but it's interesting to read the story from the subject's perspective with excerpts from the reporting party.
"Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1966 following the deaths of two climbers on the mountains of Southwest Ireland, and since then has come to the assistance of numerous climbers and walkers in distress."
Following a search for a nine-year-old boy who died in the San Diego mountains, a group of searchers put together a program designed to teach young children basic principles for staying safe in the wilderness.
SARstories is a resource for those interested in true stories by and about professional Search & Rescue personnel--both volunteer and paid--and those they help. While news stories are great, we're especially interested in firsthand accounts.
